Linear equations is an algebraic equation where each term is a constant or the product of a constant. It is also an easiest type of equation to solve because it does not contain any powers other than 1.
4x + 6 = 30 (- 5 from both sides)
4x = 24 (÷ 4 from both sides)
x = 6
Equations with unknowns on both sides
There maybe other cases where there is an unknown on both sides of a linear equation. In this case, the terms are collected to one side of the equation and then calculated using the above technique.
12x – 4 = 4x + 2 (+ 4 from both sides)
12x = 4x + 6( –4x from both sides)
8x = 6 ( ÷ by 8 from both sides)
x = 1.33 (to two decimal places)
