# Balancing equations

**Linear equations**

Linear equations is an algebraic equation where each term is a constant or the product of a constant. It is also an easiest type of equation to solve because it does not contain any powers other than 1.

For example:

4*x + 6 = 30 *(- 5 from both sides)

4*x = 24 (÷ 4 from both sides)*

*x = 6*

**Equations with unknowns on both sides**

There maybe other cases where there is an unknown on both sides of a linear equation. In this case, the terms are collected to one side of the equation and then calculated using the above technique.

For example,

12*x – 4 = 4x + 2 *(+ 4 from both sides)

12*x = 4x + 6*( –*4x* from both sides)

8*x = 6 *( ÷ by 8 from both sides)

*x = 1.33 *(to two decimal places)
