Finding the magnitude of a vector
The term “magnitude” of the vector is given by the length of the line.
The magnitude “a” in the above diagram can be calculated using Pythagoras Theorem. Note, “a” is written as |a| to represent the magnitude (or modulus).
|a| is therefore calculated as follows:
|a| = √3² + 5²
|a| = √34
|a| = √5.83 (to 2 d.p.)
