**Finding the magnitude of a vector**

The term “**magnitude”** of the vector is given by the length of the line.

The magnitude “a” in the above diagram can be calculated using Pythagoras Theorem. Note, “a” is written as |**a**| to represent the magnitude (or modulus).

|**a**| is therefore calculated as follows:

|**a**| = √3² + 5²

|**a**| = √34

|**a**| = √5.83 (to 2 d.p.)
