# The median

**The median**

The mean is defined as the middle value when all values are in order. It can sometimes be more accurate than using the average as the result is not affected by an outlier. For example:

3.12, 3.18, 4.43, **5,23**, 6,21, 6,33, 7.12

In the list above, 5.23 is the median number.

**When there are two middle numbers**

In the situation where there are two middle numbers, the number half way between these two numbers are used to calculate the median. For example:

3.12, 3.18, 4.43, **5.23**, **5.76**, 6,21, 6,33, 7.12

The number halfway between 5.23 and 5.76 is calculated as follows:

= (5.23 + 5.76) ÷ 2

= 10.99 ÷ 2

= 5.495

The median is 5.494
