Using decimals to compare fractions
Two fractions can be compared by converting them into decimals. This is carried out but dividing the numerator by the denominator using a calculator.
Using equivalent fractions
A second way to compare two fractions is by converting them to equivalent fractions. This is carried out in the following way:
- Find the lowest common multiple of both denominators
- Compare which is lower/higher by comparing the numerator
To find the higher/lower fraction see example below:
Finding a fraction of an amount
What is ⅔ of 18?
⅔ of 18 = 18 ÷ 3 x 2 =12
In this example, the 18 is divided by the denominator and then multiplied by the numerator of two. (This can also be done the opposite way but multiplying the numerator first and then dividing by the denominator.)
